As early as 1870, priests from surrounding parishes traveled to Garner to celebrate Mass. In 1882, it was clear that a sizable population lived in the Garner area so land was purchased to build a church. The first mass was celebrated in 1884. In 1889, land was purchased two miles west of Garner for a cemetary.
The present brick rectory was built in 1924. Due to the population growth, building of the current church began in the spring of 1940. There have been several renovations in its history, but the one constant is an image attributed to St. Boniface, from the Holy Bible, where he is pierced by a dagger that is located just over the front entrance of the church.
In 1992, the church underwent a major remodeling. A stairway was built in the east entrance connecting the upstairs to the basement, and the installation of an elevator and a handicap-accessible door at the parish allow for better handicap accessibility.
A major renovation project began in November of 2003. The north entrance was enlarged and included an addition to accommodate the choir. The sanctuary was remodeled and a reservation chapel was created.
St. Boniface and St. Wenceslaus in Duncan shared a pastor in 1991. In 2001, discussions began to consolidate religious education services with St. Wenceslaus. Eventually, a consolidated board of education was elected. Then, in 2002, St. Boniface and St. Wenceslaus became linked with St. Patrick, Buffalo Center; St. Patrick, Britt; St. James, Forest City; and St. Patrick, Lake Mills.
As of December 2012, 300 families were registered in the parish. We have been blessed to be served by 27 priests and many sisters over the years. A number of individuals generously dedicated their lives to a religious vocation.
